13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
14 As many were astonished at you; his visage was so ruined more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:
15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he has no form nor loveliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he has borne our sicknesses, and carried our pains: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he has put him to grief: when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he has poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

The LORD’s Passover - a special Feast, every year, to thank GOD

Exodus 12:1-51

The Passover of the LORD is instituted - God tells Moses; this is the first month of your year, and say to all the Israelites that on the tenth day to take one young sheep for each home, and kill on the fourteen of this month
v1 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the country of Egypt.
v2 He said: ‘This month will be for you the first month of your year.
v3 Tell the Israelites that the 10th day of this month is special. Each man must take a young sheep for his family. Take one young sheep for each home.
v4 The family may be too small to eat a whole sheep. Then they must eat it with another small family. You must decide this by how much each person can eat.
v5 Each young sheep must have nothing wrong with it. It must be a male that is one year old. It can be either a young sheep or a young goat.
v6 Keep the young sheep safe until the 14th day of the month. Then all Israel’s people must kill the young sheep in the evening.
v7 Then they must take some of the blood. They must put it on the wood that is round the door of their houses. They must do this to the houses where they will eat the young sheep.
v8 That night, they must cook the meat over the fire and they must eat it. They must eat it with special plants and with bread that has no yeast in it.
v9 You must cook the meat, but do not boil it in water. Cook the meat over the fire, with the head, the legs and the inside parts of the animal.
v10 You must eat all of the meat before the morning comes. If you cannot eat it before the morning, then you must burn it.
v11 This is how you must eat the young sheep: Fix your belt round your coat, put your shoes on your feet. Take your stick in your hand and eat the food quickly.
This meal will be called the Passover of the Lord.

The Israelites must remember the fourteen day of the month as a special day to the LORD every year for all time
v12 I will pass through the country of Egypt on that night. I will kill every firstborn, both men and animals. I will punish all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.
v13 The blood will be a sign for you, on all the houses where you live. When I see the blood on the house, then I will pass over you. No bad thing will touch you, when I attack the country of Egypt.’
v14 ‘You must remember this day as a special day every year. On this day, you must make a special party for the Lord. You must obey this rule in your families for all time.

The Unleavened bread days- In the first month, you must eat bread without yeast in it - Do this from the evening of the 14th day until the evening of the 21st day, for all time
v15 For 7 days, you must eat bread with no yeast in it. On the first day, you must remove all yeast from your houses. Whoever eats bread with yeast in it, during the 7 days, he does a bad thing. You must remove him from Israel’s people.
v16 On the first day, you must bring together all the people to a special meeting. And you must do the same thing on the 7th day. On these special days, you must not do any work except to prepare food. This is the only work that you can do.
v17 Enjoy the meal of the bread with no yeast in it. It was on this same day that I brought your armies out of Egypt. That is why you must enjoy this day as a special day, for all time. This is a rule that you must always obey.
v18 In the first month, you must eat bread without yeast in it. Do this from the evening of the 14th day until the evening of the 21st day.
v19 You must not have any yeast in your houses, for 7 days. Whoever eats anything with yeast in it, he does a bad thing. You must remove that person from the rest of the Israelites. You must do this if that person is a foreign person. You must also do it if he was born in that country.
v20 Eat nothing that has yeast in it. Whatever country you live in, you must eat bread without yeast in it.’

The Israelites do everything that the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron
v21 Then Moses commanded the leaders of the Israelites to come to him. He said to them: ‘Go and choose young sheep immediately, for your families. Then kill the animals for the Passover party.
v22 Take some hyssop. Make it wet with the blood that is in the dish. Then put some of the blood on the wood that is round your door. Nobody must go out of the door of his house until the morning.’
v23 ‘The Lord will pass through the country and he will kill the Egyptians. But when the Lord sees the blood on the wood round the door, he will pass over that house. He will stop the person who kills. The Lord will not let him come into your houses. The Lord will not let him kill you.
v24 You must obey these rules always, both you and your sons, for all time.
v25 You will come into the country that the Lord promised to give you. Then you must obey these rules.
v26 Your children may say to you: “What does this party mean to you?”
v27 Then you must say to them: “It is the Lord’s Passover party. The Lord passed over the houses of the Israelites when they were in Egypt. He killed the Egyptians but he saved the people in our houses.” ’ Then the people bent their heads and they worshipped God.
v28 And the Israelites did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.

The Tenth Plague; the killing of all the firstborn sons in Egypt
v29 At midnight, the Lord killed all the firstborn sons in the country of Egypt. The firstborn son of Pharaoh, the king, died. But also, the firstborn son of any man who was in prison died. Every firstborn son in Egypt died. All the firstborn animals died also.
v30 Pharaoh and all his servants got up in the middle of the night. All the Egyptians also got up in the middle of the night. Everyone was crying in Egypt because there was a dead person in every home.

The Egyptians urge the Israelites to leave
v31 Then Pharaoh commanded Moses and Aaron to come to him, during the night. He said: ‘Get up! Go away from my people! You and all the Israelites, go! Go. And worship the Lord, as you want to.
v32 Take all your animals with you, as you have said. Go away! But ask God to do good things to me too.’
v33 The Egyptians really wanted the Israelites to leave. They wanted to send them out of the country immediately. The Egyptians said: ‘If we do not send them away immediately, we will all die!’
v34 So the Israelites took their bread before they had cooked it. They had not even put the yeast into it. They put the bread in dishes and they covered it with clothes. Then they carried the dishes on their shoulders.
v35 The Israelites had obeyed Moses. They had asked the Egyptians for silver and gold. They had also asked them for clothes.
v36 The Lord had made the Egyptians think good thoughts about the Israelites. Because of this, the Egyptians let them have all that they asked for. So the Israelites took everything that was valuable from the Egyptians.

The Israelites leave Egypt
v37 Then the Israelites traveled from Rameses to Succoth. There were about 600 000 men who walked. There were also many women and children.
v38 Many other people traveled with them. And they had a very large number of animals, both sheep and cows.
v39 The Israelites cooked the bread that they had brought with them from Egypt. It had no yeast in it, because the Israelites left Egypt quickly. The Egyptians had pushed them out. The Israelites did not have time to make bread with yeast in it. Nor did they have time to prepare any other food.
v40 The Israelites had lived in Egypt for 430 years.
v41 It was on the last day of the 430 years that all the Lord’s people left the country called Egypt.
v42 The Lord did not sleep on that night, when he brought the Israelites out of Egypt. Because of this, all the Israelites must not sleep during this special night, every year. They and their families must remember this rule, for all time. They must do this, to thank the Lord.

Rules for the Passover feast
v43 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: ‘These are the rules for the Passover party.
No foreign person can eat the Passover food.
v44 If you buy a foreign slave, you must first circumcise him. Then he can eat the food.
v45 But if you pay him money for his work, he must not eat the food. A visitor must not eat the food.
v46 You must eat the meat in one house. You must not take any of the meat outside the house. You must not break any of the bones in the meat.
v47 All the Israelites must enjoy the party together.
v48 There may be a foreign person who lives among you. He may want to enjoy the Lord’s Passover too. But he must first circumcise himself and all the males in his house. Then he can enjoy the Passover party, like a man who is born in Israel. But no male person without circumcision can enjoy the Passover party.
v49 The Israelites and the foreign people who live among you must all obey this rule.’
v50 All the Israelites did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses and
Aaron.
v51 And on the same day, the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt, like a large army of people.
Comment:
Verse 13 - ‘I will pass over you.’ This is where the English word ‘Passover’ comes from. God made a promise. He would not kill anyone in a house that had blood on the door. He would ‘pass over’ that house.
Verse 22 - ‘Hyssop’ is a plant with lots of leaves. They held the hyssop in the hand and they used it like a paint brush. They painted some of the blood on the pieces of wood round the doors.
Verse 23 - ‘The person who kills’ was a special angel.
Verse 39 - When you make bread with yeast in it, you must wait for the bread to become light and full of air. Then you can cook it. This takes some time. The Israelites were in a hurry. They did not have time for this.
Verse 42 - ‘The Lord did not sleep.’ This does not mean that God sometimes sleeps. It means that God was watching the Israelites in a special way. He was watching them, when they left Egypt. He was keeping them safe. So the Israelites must have a special party on this night, every year, to thank God.

Numbers 4:34-49

v34-49 Moses, Aaron and the leaders of the people obeyed the LORD’s command.
They counted Levi’s tribe by clans and families.
They registered all the men who were between 30 and 50 years old.
These men were able to work in God’s Tent.
There were 2750 men from Kohath’s clan.
There were 2630 men from Gershon’s clan. There were 3200 men from Merari’s clan.
This made a total of 8580 men.
They had duties to serve and to carry God’s Tent.
Moses, Aaron and the leaders told each man what duties he had to do.
This is what the LORD had told Moses to do.
Comment:
Verses 34-49 - In this second census of Levi’s tribe, Moses and his helpers counted the men who could work in God’s Tent. The beginning and end of this passage emphasises again that Moses and the leaders obeyed God. However, later in the book, we shall read about how the Israelites did not obey God.

Numbers 4:29-33

v29-30 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Count the men who are in the families that belong to Merari’s clan. Register all the men who are between 30 and 50 years old. Only count those men who can work in God’s Tent.
v31 These are the duties of Merari’s clan. The men from this clan must carry the frames of God’s Tent and its bars, poles and bases.
v32 They must carry the poles, bases, pegs (like thick nails – see note below) and ropes of the yard that surrounds God’s Tent. Merari’s clan is responsible for all the equipment that belongs with these things. Each man in Merari’s clan is responsible for particular things. Tell each man which things he must carry.
v33 These are the duties of Merari’s clan in God’s Tent. Aaron’s son, Ithamar, will direct them.’
Comment:
Verses 29-33 - Merari’s clan was the smallest clan in Levi’s tribe. Their duties may not seem as important as the duties of Kohath’s and Gershon’s clans.
Merari’s clans were responsible for the equipment that supported God’s Tent. This included the pegs. The pegs were like thick nails. People hammered the pegs in to the ground. They tied rope round each peg. They attached the other end of the rope to the corner of the tent. This held the tent’s cover in place over the frame.
If any of this equipment broke, God’s Tent would fall down. The Israelites needed all of it, even the smallest parts.
So the tasks that God gave to Merari’s clan were as important as the other clans’ tasks. The clans worked together to serve God.
Christians must work together to serve God, too. Every task that we do for God is necessary. God has important work for every Christian to do.

v24 These are the duties of Gershon’s clan.
v25 The men from this clan must carry God’s Tent, its curtains and its two outer covers. They must carry the curtain for the entrance
v26 and the curtains of the yard that surrounds God’s Tent. Also, they must carry the curtain and ropes for the entrance to the yard. The men from Gershon’s clan are responsible for all the equipment that belongs with these curtains. They must look after all these things.
v27 Moses and Aaron will tell them what to do and where to carry these things.
v28 These are the duties of Gershon’s clan in God’s Tent. Aaron’s son, Ithamar the priest, must direct them in this work.’
Comment:
Verses 21-28 - Gershon’s clan was responsible for all the curtains and ropes in God’s Tent. This included the curtains that surrounded the Most Holy Place and the Holy Place. Also, it included the outer covers of leather.
Gershon’s clan was responsible for the curtains and equipment of the yard, too. God allowed the men from Gershon’s clan to touch these things. But the priests, especially Ithamar, watched them and gave them instructions.

The duties of Kohath’s clan – Part 2
v12 Then Aaron and his sons must take all the objects that people use to worship in God’s Tent. They must wrap the objects in a blue cloth. They must put a special cover of leather over them. Then they must put the objects in a frame to carry them.
v13 They must remove the ashes from the altar of bronze. They must put a purple cloth over it.
v14 On the cloth, they must put all the equipment that people use at the altar. This includes the pans for the fire, the forks for the meat, the shovels (a type of tool) and the bowls. They must put a special cover of leather over it. Then they must put in place the poles that they use to carry the altar.
v15 When the camp is ready to move, the men from Kohath’s clan must be ready to carry all these things. But they must wait until Aaron and his sons have covered all the sacred objects. The members of Kohath’s clan must not touch the sacred objects. They will die if they touch the sacred objects. These are the duties of Kohath’s clan. They must carry the sacred objects whenever the Israelites travel.
v16 Aaron’s son, Eleazar the priest, must look after the oil for the lamps and the incense. He must look after the grain that people offer to God. Also, he must look after the oil that the priests use to anoint people. He is responsible for God’s Tent and everything that is in it.’
v17 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
v18-19 ‘Do not cause the end of Kohath’s clan. Do not let its members die. This will happen if they come near to the sacred objects. So Aaron and his sons must go into God’s Tent with Kohath’s clan to prevent this. They must tell each man what to do and what to carry.
v20 But the men from Kohath’s clan must not go into God’s Tent in order to look at the sacred objects. If the men from Kohath’s clan just glance at the sacred objects, they will die.’
Comment:
Verses 12-15 - Also, they wrapped all the things that they used with the table, the stand for the lamps and the altars.
The priests had to prepare everything so that it was ready for Kohath’s clan. The men from that clan had to carry these objects on their shoulders. The poles made it easier for the men to move all the objects. They carried the sacred objects on poles so that they did not touch them.
Verse 16 - Aaron’s older son, Eleazar, had a very important job. He had to make sure that everyone obeyed these instructions. He told everyone what to do in God’s Tent. Also, he carried the different oils, the incense and the grain for the sacrifices.
Verses 17-20 - Again, God warned Moses and Aaron. Only the priests could look at these sacred objects. If anyone from Kohath’s clans saw the sacred objects, they would die.
God is holy completely. When we worship him, we must remember this. We can come near to God only by means of Jesus, God’s Son. Jesus became the only sacrifice for our sins that God accepts. When we believe in Jesus, God allows us to come near to him. In fact, he invites us to come near to him!

The duties of Kohath’s clan – Part 1
v1 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
v2-3 ‘Kohath’s clan is part of Levi’s tribe. Prepare a list of the men in their families. Register all those men who are between 30 and 50 years old. Only count those men who can work in God’s Tent.
v4 Kohath’s clan will be responsible for the most sacred objects that people use to worship in God’s Tent.
v5 When the Israelites are ready to move the camp, Aaron and his sons must go into God’s Tent. They must take down the curtain that is in front of the Ark. They must cover the Ark with it.
v6 They must put a special cover of leather over this. They must put a blue cloth on the top. Then they must put in place the poles that they use to carry the Ark.
v7 Next, Aaron and his sons must cover the table for the bread that they offer to the LORD. They must use a blue cloth. They must put on it the plates, dishes, bowls and jugs. These are the jugs for the wine that they offer to the LORD. Some bread must be on the table always.
v8 They must put a red cloth over all of this. They must put a special cover of leather on the top. Then they must put in place the poles that they use to carry the table.
v9 They must cover the stand for the lamp with a blue cloth. They must cover all the lamps, trays, holders for oil and snuffers. (A snuffer is a tool. People use it to cover a lamp so that the flame disappears.)
v10 They must wrap the stand and its equipment in a special cover of leather. Then they must put it on a frame to carry it.
v11 They must put a blue cloth over the altar of gold. They must put a special cover of leather on the top. They must put in place the poles that they use to carry the altar.
Comment:
Verses 1-3 - There were three groups of families in Levi’s tribe. These were Gershon’s clan, Kohath’s clan and Merari’s clan. Each clan had different duties. The priests told them what to do. Moses counted all the men in Levi’s tribe who were between 30 and 50 years old. These men had to work in God’s Tent and in the yard that surrounded it. They had to take all the parts down and to carry them whenever the camp moved.
Verses 4-6 - Moses counted Kohath’s clan first. They were responsible for the most sacred objects in God’s Tent. But the priests had to cover these sacred objects before Kohath’s clan saw them. Only priests could look at the sacred objects. Anyone else would die if they looked at the sacred objects.
The most sacred object was the Ark. There were two rooms in God’s Tent. The Ark was in the smaller room. This room was called the Most Holy Place.
A curtain divided the smaller room from the larger room. The larger room was called the Holy Place. The priests wrapped the Ark in this curtain. They put a cover of leather over this. The Hebrew word that we translate as ‘leather’ means ‘the skin of an animal’. But we do not know to which type of animal the skin belonged. Experts think that it was probably an unusual animal.
Lastly, the priests wrapped the Ark in a blue cloth. Probably, the colour blue reminded the people of heaven (see Exodus 24:10).
There were rings on the Ark. The priests put poles through these rings. When the camp travelled, four men lifted these poles onto their shoulders. They carried the Ark in front of all the Israelites as they marched. This showed that God was leading them.
Verses 7-11 - Next, the priests wrapped all the sacred objects that were in the Holy Place.
There was a special table in the Holy Place. There were 12 loaves of bread on it (see Leviticus 24:5-9). This was the number of the tribes of Israel. The loaves showed that God was with all the Israelites. On every Sabbath, the High Priest took away the old loaves. He put new loaves on the table. There was bread on the table always. This showed that God was with his people always.
The priests covered the special table first. Next, they covered the stand for the lamps. This stand was very important. We shall write more about it in the notes on chapter 8:1-4. Also, they covered the altar of gold. The priests did not sacrifice animals to burn on this altar. Instead, they burned special incense.
Then, they covered the altar on which the priests burned sacrifices of animals.

Moses counts the Israelites’ first-born sons – Levites dedicated instead of the first-born sons
v40 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Now count the Israelites’ first-born sons. Register all those who are one month old or older. Write their names in a list.
v41 The Israelites’ first-born sons belong to me. But instead, I shall accept the males who are in Levi’s tribe. They will be mine. I am the LORD! Also, I shall accept the animals that Levi’s tribe own, instead of the Israelites’ first-born animals.’
v42 Moses obeyed the LORD. He counted the Israelites’ first-born sons.
v43 He registered the names of all the first-born males of one month old or older. There were 22 273 names in this list.
v44 The LORD said to Moses,
v45 ‘Give Levi’s tribe to me instead of the Israelites’ first-born sons. Give to me the animals that Levi’s tribe own, instead of the Israelites’ animals. Levi’s tribe will belong to me. I am the LORD!
v46 There are 273 more first-born Israelites than males in Levi’s tribe. You must buy the extra Israelites from me.
v47 You must collect five pieces of silver for each Israelite. The pieces of silver must be the official weight (see note).
v48 You must give this money to Aaron and his sons.’
v49 So Moses collected the money for the extra 273 first-born sons.
v50 He collected 1365 pieces of silver from them. The pieces of silver were the official weight.
v51 Then, he gave the money to Aaron and his sons, as the LORD had ordered him.
Comments:
Verses 40-51 - The first-born Israelites belonged to God (see note on verses 11-13). A person who belongs to someone is a slave. So these first-born Israelites were really God’s slaves. But God had decided to accept the males from Levi’s tribe instead of the first-born Israelites. However, there were 273 more first-born Israelites than males from Levi’s tribe. So Moses had to buy these 273 first-born Israelites from God.
Moses had to collect five pieces of silver for each first-born Israelite. This was the price of a slave at that time. It was a lot of money. Many people earned less than one piece of silver in a month. We do not know who paid the five pieces of silver. Perhaps Moses collected it from all the first-born Israelites. Perhaps just the 273 males paid it. But again, Moses obeyed God.
At that time, people used pieces of silver for money. But the pieces of silver were not all the same weight. The ‘official weight’ (verse 47) was the same weight as a piece of silver that people kept in God’s Tent. The weight of this piece of silver was about 11.5 grams. So the pieces of silver that people paid for their first-born sons had to weigh about 11.5 grams. Still the Jews today make this payment to redeem their first-born sons. (To redeem means to buy back by means of a sacrifice or a payment.)

Whenever the Israelites travelled, each clan had to carry their own parts of God’s Tent
v38 Moses, Aaron and Aaron’s sons had to camp in front of God’s Tent, on the east side. They had to carry out duties in God’s Tent on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who tried to do the priests’ work would die.
v39 So Moses and Aaron obeyed the LORD. They counted Levi’s tribe by their clans. There were 22 000 males in Levi’s tribe who were one month old or older.
Comment:
The priests camped on the east side of God’s Tent (verse 38). Kohath’s clan camped on the south side of God’s Tent (verse 29). Kohath’s clan was the biggest group. They had a very important job. They were responsible for the special furniture in God’s Tent.
Gershon’s clan camped on the west side of God’s Tent. They were responsible for the covers, curtains and ropes.
Merari’s clan was the smallest group. They camped on the north side of God’s Tent. They had to look after all the parts of the Tent’s frame and the things in the yard that surrounded it.

v17 Levi’s sons were Gershon, Kohath and Merari. They had become the leaders of their own clans.

Comment:
Verses 14-39 God told Moses to count all the males in Levi’s tribe who were one month old or older. The men from Levi’s tribe would help the priests. So the members of that tribe belonged to God in a special way. He had accepted them to belong to him instead of the Israelites’ first-born sons (Numbers 3:11-13).
Again, Moses did what God asked him to do. Moses counted Levi’s tribe by clan. He told each clan where to camp.

The duties of Levi’s tribe - Aaron and his sons appointed as priests
v5 The LORD said to Moses,
v6 ‘Bring Levi’s tribe to Aaron the priest. They must help him.
v7-8 They must work for him and all the Israelites in God’s Tent. They will be responsible for everything in God’s Tent. They will take care of it. They will carry on these duties on behalf of the Israelites.
v9 Give Levi’s tribe to Aaron and his sons. So they will be the Israelites who belong completely to him.
v10 Appoint Aaron and his sons as priests. Anyone else who tries to do the priests’ duties will die.’
v11-13 Also, the LORD said to Moses, ‘I have chosen Levi’s tribe from the other Israelites. Levi’s tribe will belong to me in a special way. I had decided that the Israelites’ first-born sons would belong to me. Also, I had decided that all their first-born male animals would belong to me. I made this decision when I let the Egyptians’ first-born sons die. But now I have decided that Levi’s tribe will belong to me, instead of the Israelites’ first-born sons. Levi’s tribe are mine. I am the LORD!’
Comment:
Verses 5-10 - Aaron and his sons were the priests. The rest of Levi’s tribe acted as their servants. These servants helped the priests to look after God’s Tent. They had two main duties. Whenever the Israelites travelled, Levi’s tribe had to take down God’s Tent. Then they had to carry the parts as they travelled. This was heavy work!
Also, they had to look after God’s Tent always. If any of the other Israelites came too near to God’s Tent, that person would die. Then God would not punish all the Israelites because one person had not obeyed him (see Numbers 1:53; 16:40; 25:8).
Verses 11-13 - Before they escaped into the desert, the Israelites were slaves in the country called Egypt. Moses had asked the king of Egypt to let the Israelites go free. But the king had refused. So God had allowed 10 bad things to happen to the Egyptians (Exodus chapters 7-11). For example, their main river had changed into blood. And many insects had eaten their crops. Finally, all the Egyptians’ first-born sons had died. But all the Israelites’ first-born sons had remained alive. When this happened, the king of Egypt let the Israelites go free.
The Israelites’ first-born male animals and also their first-born sons belonged to God. They had to redeem both their animals and their sons (Exodus 13:1-2; chapters 11 to 13; 22:29-30; 34:19-20). (To redeem means to buy back by means of a sacrifice or a payment).
But when God was giving the Law to Moses, the Israelites made an idol. They worshipped it. Only Levi’s tribe were loyal to God (Exodus chapter 32). So God wanted Levi’s tribe to serve him, instead of the other Israelites’ first-born sons. And so Levi’s tribe served God instead of the Israelites’ first-born sons.

Aaron’s sons
v1 The LORD spoke to Moses on Sinai mountain. This is the family of Aaron and Moses at that time.
v2 Aaron had four sons. Nadab was the oldest son. The other sons were Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
v3 Aaron anointed them. And he ordained them (gave them authority to work as priests). They served God in God’s Tent.
v4 But Nadab and Abihu fell down and died in front of the LORD. This happened when they offered unholy fire (see note below) to the LORD in the Sinai desert. They had no children. So only Eleazar and Ithamar worked as priests while their father Aaron was alive.
Comment:
Verses 1-4 - Aaron was the High Priest (Leviticus chapter 8). All his sons were priests. But Nadab and Abihu did something that was very wrong. God punished them. He sent fire to burn them until they were dead. We know this because this story is in Leviticus 10:1-3, too.
However, it is not certain what ‘unholy fire’ means. Priests sometimes burned incense in God’s Tent. Nadab and Abihu were burning incense when they died. The fire was ‘unholy’ because God had not ordered them to offer it (Leviticus 10:1). So they were opposing God on purpose.
Nadab and Abihu had not obeyed God. They were his priests. They had neglected to serve him properly. They had not shown honor to God. This teaches us something very important. God loves us. He is our friend. But also he is the maker of everything that exists. He is holy completely. We must remember this. We must show honor to God always.

The arrangement of the camp
v32 Moses and his helpers had counted all the Israelite men who were able to fight. They had counted them in groups. The total number of soldiers was 603 550.
v33 But they did not register the men in Levi’s tribe. The LORD had ordered Moses not to do this.
v34 So the Israelites did everything that the LORD had told Moses to do. They arranged their camp in the way that the LORD wanted. Each tribe camped under its own flag. When they set out, each man walked with his own clan and his own family.
Comments:
Verses 1-34 God told Moses and Aaron how to arrange the Israelites’ camp. So each person knew the exact place where they must put their tent.
The tribes formed a square with God’s Tent in the middle. In the 13th century BC, the army of Egypt camped in a square. (BC is the period of time before Jesus was born.) The king’s tent was in the middle. In the Israelites’ camp, God’s Tent was in the middle, because God was Israel’s king.
Levi’s tribe camped in the space between the other tribes and God’s Tent. They looked after it. They did not allow the other Israelites to come too close to God’s Tent.
The tribes camped in four groups. There were three tribes in each group. The tribes of Judah, Reuben, Ephraim and Dan commanded one group each. Each group had its own flag. They would carry this flag in a battle. Also, each tribe had its own flag. There was a Jewish tradition that the tribes’ flags were the colours of the 12 jewels (precious stones) in the High Priest’s special clothes (Exodus 28:15-24). But there is nothing in the Bible about the colours of the flags.
It seems the tribes had to camp in order of importance. East was the most important position. It was on the same side as the entrance to God’s Tent. So the largest and most important group of tribes (Judah’s group) looked after it. Reuben’s group of tribes camped on the south side. Ephraim’s group camped on the west side. Lastly, Dan’s group camped on the north side.
Whenever the Israelites travelled, the tribes had to walk in this same order. Levi’s tribe carried the parts of God’s Tent. They walked between the other tribes. God’s Tent should have reminded them that God was with them always. When they camped, God was with them. When they travelled, God travelled with them.
God told Moses and Aaron to arrange the camp in a military way. Every time the Israelites set off, they marched as an army. They had to be ready to fight for the Promised Land.

v47 Moses did not count the families in Levi’s tribe when he registered the other tribes.
v48 The LORD had said to him,
v49 ‘Do not include Levi’s tribe in this census of the Israelites.
v50 Instead, Levi’s tribe must be responsible for God’s Tent. They must look after everything that is in it. They must take care of it. They must camp round it. And they must carry it whenever you move the Israelites’ camp.
v51 Whenever you leave a place, Levi’s tribe must take apart God’s Tent. When you arrive at a new place, Levi’s tribe must put God’s Tent together again. If anyone from another tribe comes near to God’s Tent, that person will die.
v52 All the other tribes must camp in their own groups, with their own flags.
v53 But Levi’s tribe must camp round God’s Tent. They must look after it. They must not let people go near to it. If people go near to it, I shall be very angry with the Israelites.’
v54 The Israelites did everything that God ordered Moses to do.
Comment:
Verses 47-54 - God did not want Levi’s tribe to be soldiers. They had a different job. It was a very important job. They had to look after God’s Tent.
Levi was Jacob’s third son (Genesis 29:34). Levi had three sons. Their names were Gershon, Kohath and Merari (Genesis 46:11). Moses and Aaron were Kohath’s descendants (Numbers 3:14-24). Aaron was the first High Priest. The High Priest had the most important duties in God’s Tent. Aaron’s sons were priests. They helped Aaron. Men from Levi’s tribe helped the priests to do their duties. The High Priest was their leader. They had to carry the parts of God’s Tent whenever the Israelites traveled. Men from Levi’s tribe had to put the parts together again when the Israelites stopped to camp.
Also, Levi’s tribe had to look after God’s Tent. It was the most important place in the camp. God is everywhere. But he was in God’s Tent in a special way. The priests worshipped God there. It was a very holy place. The Israelites had to respect it. If they came too near to it, they would die.
God is good completely. But every person has sinned. So, in order to come close to God, the Israelites had to offer sacrifices.
But it is different for us. Christians can be close to God. This is not because we do good things. It is because Jesus, God’s son, suffered the punishment for our sins on our behalf. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice. So we do not need to offer sacrifices of animals. Jesus’ blood takes away all our sins and makes us clean inside our hearts. We must confess our sins to God, so that he will forgive us. We must believe that Jesus died on our behalf. And we must invite him into our lives. We can come and talk to God at any time. God invites us to come close to him! (Hebrews chapter 10).
Only Levi’s tribe served God in his holy Tent. They belonged to God in a special way. But, because of Jesus’ sacrifice, all Christians belong to God in a special way, like priests (1 Peter 2:5).
But the events in this book happened many centuries before Jesus came. So Levi’s tribe had to make sure that the Israelites respected God’s Tent.
The people did everything that God wanted (verse 54). They obeyed him completely. But they did not obey him afterwards. The rest of the book emphasizes this.

Moses, Aaron and the 12 leaders counted all these men. They registered each man’s name by his clan and family. The total number of men was 603 550.
Verses 20-46 - There were 603 550 strong, healthy men who were 20 years old or older. This number does not include women, girls, boys under 20 years old, old people or ill people. It does not include Levi’s tribe. Levi’s tribe were not soldiers. They had a different job to do. So Moses counted them later.
This means that there were between two and five million people in the camp. This was a very large group of people.

v16 God chose these men from among the people. They were the leaders of their ancestors’ tribes. They were Israel’s leaders.

v18 asked the people to meet together that same day. They registered all the people by clans and families. They recorded the names of all the men who were 20 years old or older. They counted each one.
v19 They obeyed the LORD’s command to Moses. In this way, Moses counted the people when they were in the Sinai desert.
Comment:
Verses 4-9 This list reminds us that this is a book about history. These are the names of real people, with their fathers’ names and their tribes’ names.
The Israelites’ ancestors were Jacob’s sons (Genesis 35:23-26). Each of Jacob’s sons started a tribe. Each son’s name became the name of his descendants’ tribe.
In this list, two half tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh, are there on behalf of Joseph’s tribe. Levi’s tribe had a special job to do. So Moses counted them separately (Numbers 3:14-39).
Names were very important to the Israelites. They chose names carefully. If you knew a person’s name, you knew something about their character.
Apart from the names of the tribes, there are 24 names in this list. Many of these names have one of the Hebrew names for God inside them. These Hebrew names are ‘El’ (God), ‘Shaddai’ (All-Powerful) and ‘Zur’ (Rock). For example, Elishama means ‘My God listens’. Zurishaddai means ‘The All-Powerful God is my Rock (security).’ Often, the Israelites said that God is like a rock. A rock can be a shelter for people. It can provide security. It can protect people. God does these things for his people.
6 of these names, like Abi (My Father) and Ahi (My Brother), also refer to God. God is like a father and a brother to us.
These names show us that God was very important to the Israelites. They were very aware of him.

The Israelites at the start of their journey

Numbers 1:1-4

God’s command to Moses to ’make a census of all the Israelites’ clans and families; the first census of Israel
v1 The LORD spoke to Moses. Moses was in God’s Tent. The Israelites were living in the Sinai desert. It was the first day of the second month during the second year after they had left the country called Egypt.
The LORD said,
v2 ’Make a census of all the Israelites’ clans and families. Register the name of every man
v3 who is 20 years old or more. Register every man who can fight in the army. You and Aaron will count them, group by group.
v4 Ask one man from each tribe to help you. These men must be the leaders of their clans.’
Comment:
Chapters 1-10: The Israelites at the start of their journey
The Israelites had camped near Sinai Mountain. They were preparing to travel to the Promised Land. Before they left, God told Moses to do four things.
1. Celebrate the Passover (Numbers 9:1-14).
2. Count the soldiers (Numbers chapter 1).
3. Tell each tribe where to camp round God’s Tent (Numbers chapter 2).
4. Give duties to the priests (Numbers chapters 3 and 4).
This part of the book describes these four things. But the accounts are not in the order that these things happened. The events in chapters 7:1 to 9:15 happened before the events in chapters 1 to 6. But all these events happened during a period of less than 50 days (Numbers 1:1; 10:11).
Verse 1 - ‘The LORD spoke to Moses.’ This is a very important sentence. It appears over 80 times in this book. God had chosen Moses to be the Israelites’ leader. God spoke to Moses. Then, Moses told the people what God had said. Also, Moses spoke to God on behalf of the people.
God’s Tent was a very special tent. God had told Moses how to build it (Exodus 25:8 to 27:21). The Israelites took it with them on their journey. In the desert, it was the place where they worshipped God. It showed them that God was always among them.
It had two rooms. A curtain separated these rooms. The bigger room was called ‘the Holy Place’. The smaller room was called ‘the Most Holy Place’. The Ark was inside this room. The Ark contained two pieces of stone. God had written his Law on these pieces of stone (Exodus 34:1). We shall learn more about God’s Tent in Numbers 9:15-23.
‘It was the first day of the second month during the second year after they had left the country called Egypt’ (verse 1). This verse tells us clearly when these events happened. It reminds us that we are reading about real people and real events. Many writers say that the people left Egypt during the first half of the 13th century BC. BC is the period of time before Jesus was born.
Verses 2-3 - God told Moses to count all the men who were able to fight. This was the purpose of the census. Also, it showed that every person mattered to God. Moses’ brother Aaron could help him count.
The Promised Land, which was the country called Canaan, was not empty. The people who lived there would fight the Israelites. So Israel needed a strong army.
Moses and Aaron had to count everyone group by group. Families were the smallest groups. There were several people in a family. A clan consisted of several families. A tribe consisted of several clans. The nation called Israel consisted of 12 tribes.
Verse 4 - The census was a very big responsibility. One leader from each tribe had to help Moses and Aaron. It is important for leaders to share responsibilities.

The Old Testament Book of Numbers

What does this book teach us about God?
This book teaches us some very important things about God.
1. God is with us always, if we are his people. He guides and protects us.
God guided the Israelites by means of a cloud (Numbers 9:15-23). They carried the Ark with them wherever they went. The Ark showed them that God was with them always. He protected them from their enemies (Numbers 10:33-36).
2. God wants us to trust him.
God had chosen Moses as the Israelites’ leader. But they opposed Moses many times. They complained about the food in the desert (Numbers 11:4-6). They refused to enter the Promised Land. They believed that the people there were stronger than them. They did not trust God to help them (Numbers chapters 13 and 14).
God loved them. But he had to discipline them (to teach or to control, sometimes by means of a punishment) (Numbers 14:26-35). God disciplines those people whom he loves (Hebrews 12:6).
3. There is only one real God. We must worship him only.
God never allowed the Israelites to worship false gods (Numbers chapter 25).
4. God always keeps his promises.
God had promised to give to the Israelites their own land. He rescued them from the Egyptians. He guided them through the desert. They arrived at the Promised Land. But they were afraid to enter it.
However, God did not take back his promise. Instead, he gave the Promised Land to their children.
5. God is holy.
God is different from people, whom he made. He is good completely. But all people are sinful. Sin is like dirt because it spoils our lives. Sin makes us dirty inside, in our hearts and minds. In other words, it ruins our thoughts, our attitudes and our behavior.
The Israelites washed themselves in special ways before they worshipped God. They made their bodies clean. They offered sacrifices. They believed that the blood from these sacrifices washed their sins away. So they felt clean inside their hearts. There were many special rules about how to worship God. All these rules showed that God is holy.
But we do not need to follow these special rules still. We do not need to kill animals as sacrifices. God has given us a new way to come to him. That way is by means of his son, that is, Jesus Christ. When people killed Jesus on a cross, he became the sacrifice for our sins. This sacrifice was for all people, for all time. Jesus’ blood washes our sins away. When we believe in Jesus, God forgives our sins. Jesus suffered the punishment for our sins.
Jesus is holy. When we believe in Jesus, God considers us holy, too. We can come to God at any time, in any place. God is our friend because of what Jesus did.

v30 One tenth (1/10th) of everything that comes from the land is holy. It may be grain or fruit. It belongs to the Lord.
v31 If a person buys back any of his gift to the Lord, he must pay the price and 1/5th (one fifth) more.
v32 Out of every ten animals, one animal is holy. It belongs to the Lord.
v33 A person must not change a good animal for a bad animal. A person must not change a bad animal for a good animal. If he does that, both animals are holy. They belong to the Lord. A person cannot buy them back.’
v34 These are the rules that the Lord gave to Moses on the mountain called Sinai. They are the rules for Israel’s people.

v14 A person might give his house to the Lord. The priest will decide if the house is good or bad. The priest will decide the price of the house.
v15 The person might want to buy the house back. He must pay the price of the house and 1/5th (one fifth) more. Then it will again belong to him.
v16 A person might give part of his land to the Lord. The person will decide the price by how much seed the land needs. The price will be 50 pieces of silver for a homer (220 liters or 6 bushels) of seed.
v17 If a person gives his land in a Jubilee year, the price is the same.
v18 A person might give his land after the Jubilee year. The priest will count the number of years before the next Jubilee. The price will be less.
v19 A person might want to buy the land back. He must pay the price of the land and 1/5th (one fifth) more.
v20 He may not buy it back before the year of Jubilee. Then the field becomes holy. But the man may have sold the land to another person. If he has, he cannot get it back.
v21 In the Jubilee year the land will become holy. Then it will belong to the priests.
v22 A person might buy some land from another family. He might give that land to the Lord.
v23 The priest will count how many years there are until the Jubilee year. The person must pay the money on that day. The money is holy to the Lord.
v24 In the Jubilee year, the land returns to the family from whom he bought it.
v25 The priest must decide the price of the land. He must use the correct measures.

v1 The Lord said to Moses,
v2 ‘Speak to Israel’s people; tell them this. A person might give another person to the Lord for a special promise.
v3 They can make that person free. But they must give the right amount of money to the Lord. For a man between 20 years and 60 years old, they must give 50 pieces of silver.
v4 For a woman, they must give 30 pieces of silver.
v5 For a male between five years and 20 years old, they must give to the Lord 20 pieces of silver. For a female, they must give 10 pieces of silver.
v6 For a boy between one month and five years old, they must give five pieces of silver. For a girl of the same age, the Lord must have three pieces of silver.
v7 If a man is older than 60 years, they must give 15 pieces of silver. For a woman, they must give 10 pieces of silver.
v8 A person might say this special promise to the Lord. But he might be too poor to pay the money. He must bring the person to the priest. The priest will tell the person how much money to pay. The priest will know how much money the man can give.

v46 These are the rules that the Lord gave to Moses on the mountain called Sinai. They are his covenant with Israel’s people.

Redemption of the land
v23 The people must never sell the land for all time. The land belongs to the Lord. He has said that the people can live on it.
v24 A person may buy land. But he must remember that he may have to sell it back to the seller.
v25 If a man becomes poor, he can sell some of his land. A person from his family must buy the land back for the man.
v26 But the man might not have any family. If he stops being poor, he can buy the land back.
v27 He must count how many years until the next Jubilee year. He must pay the right amount of money for the land. Then he can live on the land again.
v28 If the man is too poor to buy the land back, it will belong to the other person. It will belong to the other person until the next Jubilee year. He must return it to the poor man in the Jubilee year.
v29 A man may sell a house in a city with walls. For one year after he sells it, he can buy it back.
v30 If the man does not buy back the house, it will belong to the other person and his sons. It will belong to them for all time. They will not have to return it in the Jubilee year.
v31 If the house is in a village, a person can buy it back. If he does not buy it back, they will return it to him in the Jubilee year.
v32 The Levites (people from the family of Levi) can buy back the houses in their towns.
v33 In the Jubilee year, the Levites must get back the houses that they sold. Their towns belong to the Levites.
v34 The Levites must not sell the fields that belong to their towns. The Lord gave to them their towns and cities to live in for all time.

The Jubilee Year
v8 The people must count 7 (seven) lots of Sabbath years (7x7 years). That is 49 years.
v9 In the 50th year they must make loud music. They must blow trumpets on the 10th (tenth) day of the 7th (seventh) month. That is the Day of Atonement. They must blow the trumpet through all the country.
v10 The year will be special. It is a Jubilee year. It is a time for every one of my people to become free. Everyone can return to his own land and to his family.
v11 The 50th year is a Jubilee year. The people must not plant any seed in the fields. They must not harvest anything that grows by itself on the bushes.
v12 It is a Jubilee year for the people. And they can eat only food that they take from the fields.
v13 In the Jubilee year every person must return to the land of his family.
v14 If the people buy and sell land from each other, they must be honest with each other.
v15 The person who is selling the land will fix a price. He must count the number of years until the next Jubilee year.
v16 When there are many years, the price must be big. When there are few years, the price must be small. What the person is selling are the plants from the fields.
v17 Be honest with each other and respect the Lord. I am the Lord your God.

v3 They can plant seeds in the fields for 6 (six) years. They can cut the leaves of the plants and they can harvest the fruit for six years.

v11 The Israelite woman’s son said bad things about the Lord. The people took him to Moses. (The name of the mother was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri from the family of Dan.)
v12 They locked the man up. The Lord told them what to do with him.
v13 The Lord said to Moses,
v14 ‘Take the man outside the camp. All the people who heard him speak must put a hand on him. All the people must throw stones at him until he is dead.
v15 Tell Israel’s people, “It is a sin if any man says bad things about the Lord’s name.
v16 He must die. All the people must throw stones at him until he is dead.” You must kill anyone who says bad things about the Lord’s name. They may be a foreigner or an Israelite. You must kill them.
v17 If any man kills another man you must kill him.
v18 A man might kill an animal that belongs to another man. He must give an animal that is alive to the man. You must give a living animal if you take a living animal’s life.
v19 If a man hurts another man, you must also hurt him.
v20 Whatever the man does to another man, the other man can do to him. If he takes an eye, you can take an eye. If he breaks a bone, you can break his bone. If he takes a tooth, you can take his tooth.
v21 A man may kill an animal. That man must give back an animal that is alive. But if he kills a man, you must kill him.
v22 This rule is for all the people. It is the same rule for Israelites and foreigners. I am the Lord your God.’
v23 Moses spoke to Israel’s people. A man had said bad things about the Lord. They took him outside the camp. They threw stones at him until he died. Israel’s people did as the Lord had told Moses.

v34 ‘Tell Israel’s people that the 15th (fifteenth) day of the 7th (seventh) month is a special day. It is the Day of Houses that people have made from branches. The feast goes on for 7 (seven) days.
v35 The first day is a special day. The people must not do any work.
v36 For 7 (seven) days each person must give a gift to the Lord. The 8th (eighth) day is holy. The people must come together and they must give a burnt offering to the Lord. This is the last day of the feast. The people must not do any work on that day.
v37 These are the rules for the special days of the Lord. You must tell people that they must bring offerings to the Lord on these days. They will bring gifts for burnt offerings each day. They must bring offerings of grain, animals and wine.
v38 These are not the usual Sabbath gifts. They are not gifts to give thanks or for promises. But they are extra gifts for special days.
v39 When the people have picked the grain, they can enjoy 7 (seven) feast days. The special days will begin on the 15th (fifteenth) day of the 7th (seventh) month. On the first day and on the 8th (eighth) day they can rest.
v40 On the first day, they must take fruit and leaves from the trees. Then for 7 (seven) days they must worship the Lord.
v41 They must do this for 7 (seven) days of each year. They must obey this rule in the 7th (seventh) month now, and for all the years to come.
v42 All Israel’s people must live in houses that they have made from branches for 7 (seven) days.
v43 The people in the future will know that the Lord brought Israel’s people out of Egypt. They will know that he is the Lord. And he caused them to live in houses that they made from branches. I am the Lord, your God.’
v44 Moses told the people all that the Lord had told him.

v19 The priest must sacrifice one male goat as a sin offering. The people must give two young sheep. They must be one year old. They are a gift to the Lord.
v20 The priest will lift the animals and the bread to the Lord. They are a holy offering to the Lord. They are for the priest.
v21 On this day, the people must not do any work. They must not work anywhere that they live. It is a special day to the Lord now and for all time to come.
v22 When the people harvest the grain, they must not cut it to the edge of the field. They must not pick up any grain that falls. Some grain must remain in the field. It is for the poor people and for foreign people. I am the Lord your God.’

v11 The priest will lift it to the Lord. Then the Lord will accept their gift. The priest will do this on the day after the Sabbath day.
v12 On the same day the priest will bring a young sheep that is perfect to the Lord. It must be one year old. It is a gift from the people.
v13 He will also bring 2/10ths of an ephah (about 4 liters or 8 pints) of the best flour mixed with oil. He will burn the gift as a sacrifice. The smell of it while it is burning will give the Lord pleasure. The people must also give a ¼ hin (about 1 liter or 2 pints) of wine as a gift to the Lord.

The Passover and Bread without Yeast Feasts
v4 There are other special days. They are holy feasts. On these days you must tell the people how to obey the Lord’s rules.
v5 One special day is the 14th day of the first month. When the sun goes down, the Passover to the Lord begins.
v6 The 15th day of the first month, the feast of Bread Without Yeast begins. For seven days the people must eat bread that has no yeast in it.
v7 On the first day the people must meet together and they must not work.
v8 For seven days the people must give burnt offerings to the Lord. On the seventh day they must stop work and they must worship the Lord.’
Comment:
The Lord caused Israel’s people to stay in their houses for their last night in Egypt.
They had to put a mark on their doors with blood.
The Lord’s servant who was a spirit killed the oldest son in each house of Egypt’s people.
But he passed over the houses with blood round the doors.
So the Lord saved the sons of the Israelites. That is why this is called the Passover feast. (See Exodus 12:12-20.)

v18 ‘Say this to Aaron, to his sons and to all the people. If any person gives a gift to the Lord,
v19 he must give a bull (male cow), a sheep or a goat. The gift may be for a promise, or to thank the Lord for something or for a fellowship offering. The animal must be perfect.
v20 They must not give any animal that is not perfect. The Lord will not accept that animal.

v22 A person must not give to the Lord an animal that cannot see. The animal must not have a skin illness. And pus must not be coming from its body. The person must not burn an animal on the altar that is not perfect.
v23 A person may give a male cow or a sheep with a body that is the wrong shape. He can use it as an offering to eat with his friends (fellowship offering). But the Lord will not take this animal as a gift for a promise. That gift must be perfect. You must not put on the altar an animal that is not perfect.
v24 A person must not give a gift of an animal that has something wrong with its testicles (male parts).
v25 This rule is for Israel’s people. You must not take animals that are not perfect from foreigners. You must not offer them to the Lord. The Lord will not accept them because they are not perfect.’
v26 The Lord said to Moses,
v27 ‘When a cow or a sheep or a goat is born, it must stay with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day the people can give it as a burnt offering to the Lord.
v28 They must not kill a cow or a sheep and its baby on the same day.
v29 When they sacrifice an animal to thank the Lord, they must sacrifice it in the proper way. This will give the Lord pleasure.
v30 They must eat it on the day that they kill it. They must not keep any of it until the next day. I am the Lord.

v10 Only a person who is from the priest’s family can eat the holy gifts. Another person who is living in the priest’s house must not eat the holy gifts. If a person is being paid to work for the priest, he must not eat the holy gifts.
v11 A slave can eat the holy gifts if he was born in the priest’s house. Or he can eat the holy gifts if the priest bought him.
v12 A priest’s daughter might marry a man who is not a priest. If she has done that, she must not eat the holy food.
v13 A priest’s daughter’s husband might send her away. Or her husband might die. She might not have any children. She may go back to live in her father’s house. Then she can eat her father’s food.
v14 A person might make a mistake and eat a holy gift. He must give back to the priest the same food. He must also give 1/5th (one fifth) more.
v15 The priest must not give the holy gifts to people who are not from Aaron’s family. The gifts would become unclean.
v16 If the people eat them they are sinning. They will have to pay for their sin. I am the Lord and I make them holy.’

The impediments to eating priestly food when the person was unclean
v4 If a son of Aaron has a skin illness, he must not eat the holy gifts. If pus is coming from his body, he is not clean. He must not eat the holy offerings until he is clean. He might touch something that has touched a dead body. Or if he touches an unclean man, he will become unclean. The man may be unclean because semen is coming from his body.
v5 Aaron’s son might touch an animal that moves on its stomach. Or he might touch a person who is not clean. If he does, Aaron’s son will be unclean.
v6 The son of Aaron who touches any of these things will be unclean until evening. He must not eat any of the holy gifts until he washes his body.
v7 When the sun goes down, he will be clean. He can eat the holy gifts. They are his food.
v8 He might find something that is dead. He must not eat it. He must not eat anything that an animal has torn. It will make him unclean. I am the Lord.
v9 Aaron’s sons must obey the Lord’s rules. If they do not obey them, it is a sin. They will die. I am the Lord who makes people holy.

v1 The Lord said to Moses,
v2 ‘Israel’s people give gifts to the Lord. Those gifts are holy. Tell Aaron and his sons that those things are holy. Tell them that they must remember that. They must give honor to my name. I am the Lord.
v3 One of your sons may not be clean. That son must not come near the Lord’s holy offerings. But perhaps he may not obey my rule. He might go near to the holy gifts. The priests who are clean must punish him. They must send him away. He must go from the Lord’s house. I am the Lord. This rule is for now and for all time.

v16 The Lord said to Moses,
v17 ‘Talk to Aaron. Say, “A priest who does not have a perfect body must not sacrifice the burnt offerings to the Lord.” This rule is for now and for all time.
v18 A priest who cannot see must not sacrifice the food to the Lord. A priest who cannot walk must not sacrifice food to the Lord. A priest with a body that is the wrong shape must not offer food to the Lord.
v19 A priest with a hand that is the wrong shape must not offer food to the Lord. A priest with a foot that is the wrong shape must not offer food to the Lord.
v20 A priest with a back that is not straight must not offer food to the Lord. Neither must a priest who is very small offer a food gift. A priest who has an eye illness or a skin illness must not offer food to the Lord. Neither must a priest offer food if his testicles (secret parts) are not whole.
v21 If a priest’s son has something wrong with his body, he must not come near to the altar. He must not give the food offering to the Lord.
v22 He can eat God’s holy food and God’s most holy food.
v23 But none of Aaron’s family who is not perfect can go near the holy curtain or the altar. He would make the holy place unclean. I am the Lord. I make them holy.’
v24 Moses told all these rules to Aaron, to his sons and to all Israel’s people.

v6 A priest must be holy. He must not speak bad words about the Lord. He is the person who sacrifices the people’s burnt offerings to the Lord.
v7 A priest must not marry a woman who has left her husband. He must not marry a woman if men have paid her to have sex with them. He must not marry a woman whose husband has sent her away. A priest must be holy.
v8 A priest is holy because he sacrifices the people’s offerings to the Lord. A priest is holy because I, the Lord, am holy.
v9 A priest’s daughter must not have sex with men who pay her. That would make her unclean. She would take away her father’s honor. If she does not obey, you must burn her in a fire.

Adultery is prohibited
v20 A slave girl belongs to a man. Another man must not have sex with her. If he does, he is doing a wrong thing. But the girl is not free. He has not bought her. You must punish them. But you must not kill them because the girl was not free.

Leviticus 18:6-18

A person must not have intercourse sexual intercourse with any close relative
v6 A person must not have sex with a person who belongs to his own family. I am the Lord.
v7 Do not have sex with your mother. You will cause your father to be ashamed.
v8 Do not have sex with a wife of your father. Your father will be ashamed.
v9 Do not have sex with your sister. Do not have sex with the sister who has the same mother but a different father from you. Do not have sex with the sister who has the same father but a different mother from you. Do not have sex with your sister even if she lives in the same house as you.
v10 Do not have sex with any granddaughter. You will be ashamed.
v11 Do not have sex with the daughter of your father and his wife. She is your sister.
v12 Do not have sex with your father’s sister. She is his sister.
v13 Do not have sex with your mother’s sister. She is her sister.
v14 Do not have sex with the wife who is married to your father’s brother. She is your aunt.
v15 Do not have sex with your son’s wife.
v16 Do not have sex with your brother’s wife. You will make your brother ashamed.
v17 Do not have sex with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sex with her son’s daughter or with her daughter’s daughter. They are her family and they are near to her. If you do this you are sinning.
v18 Do not take your wife’s sister for a second wife. Do not have sex with your wife’s sister if your wife is alive.

Rules about sex – The people must obey God’ rules, HE is the LORD
v1 The Lord said to Moses,
v2 ‘Tell Israel’s people that I am the Lord their God.
v3 They lived in the country called Egypt. They must not do as the people in Egypt do. I am bringing them to live in Canaan’s country. They must not do as the people in Canaan do.
v4 They must obey my rules. I am the Lord.
v5 If they obey my rules, they will give me pleasure. If they obey my rules, they will remain alive. I am the Lord.

Rules about the Day of Atonement

Leviticus 17:10-16

Israel’s people must not eat blood and a foreign person among them must not eat blood
v10 An Israelite or a foreigner who lives among you must not eat blood. And they must not drink it. If somebody does, the Lord will turn away from him. He will take that person away from his people.
v11 The blood gives its life to an animal. You must put the blood on the altar. The Lord has given the blood to you. It atones for your sins and it gives life to you.
v12 For this reason, Israel’s people must not eat blood. And the people who are travelling with them must not eat blood.
v13 A person may catch an animal or a bird that is clean to eat. If he does, he must pour its blood on the ground. He must cover the blood with some earth.
v14 The animal’s life is in its blood. That is why no Israelite should eat any animal’s blood. You must send any person that eats blood away from your people.
v15 An Israelite or a foreign person may find a dead animal. If he eats it, he must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. Then he will become clean. A person might find an animal or a bird that a wild animal has killed. He must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening.
v16 If that person does not wash clothes and his body, it is his own mistake.’
Comment:
Animals that have died have the blood in them. And animals that other animals have killed have the blood in them. So they will not be clean.

Animal sacrifice in an open field was prohibited
v1 The Lord said to Moses,
v2 ‘Tell these rules to Aaron and his sons and all the people.
v3 If a person sacrifices a male cow, a sheep or a goat in the fields, that is a sin. Or if a person sacrifices it in the camp, that is a sin.
v4 The animal is an offering to the Lord. The person should bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting. He should offer it to the Lord there. The person who offers a sacrifice anywhere else has sinned. He has sacrificed an animal in the wrong way. He must leave the camp.
v5 This rule will stop the people giving sacrifices to the Lord in the fields. They must bring their gifts to the priest. They will be fellowship offerings. The priest will be at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
v6 He must shake the blood of the animal on the Lord’s altar. That altar is at the door of the Tent of Meeting. The priest must burn the fat. The smell of it while it is burning will give the Lord pleasure.
v7 The people give sacrifices in the fields to worship idols that seem like goats. They must never do this again. This rule is for now and for all time.
v8 If an Israelite gives a sacrifice or a burnt offering he must offer it at the Tent of Meeting’s door. A foreigner may live among you. If he gives a sacrifice he must offer it to the Lord at the Tent of Meeting’s door.
v9 If they did not offer it to the Lord at the Tent of Meeting’s door they are sinning. You must send them away from the camp.

The rules that the LORD commanded Moses for the day of Atonement
v29 On the 10th (tenth) day of the 7th (seventh) month, Israel’s people must not eat any food. This is a rule that you must obey for all time. The people who are travelling with them must not eat any food. None of them must do any work.
v30 This day will make them clean from all their sins. The Lord will see them as clean people. This will be the Day of Atonement.
v31 It is a day when you do not eat any food. It is a day for rest. This is a rule from the Lord and you must do this every year.
v32 The High Priest is a chosen son of Aaron. And he must make atonement. He will put on the holy clothes. He will bring the people’s offerings to the Lord.
v33 He will make atonement for the Most Holy Place. He will make atonement for the Tent of Meeting. He will make atonement for the altar. He will make atonement for the priests and for all the people.
v34 He will make atonement for all the Israelites’ sins once every year. This rule is for now and for all time.’
The people did everything quite as the Lord had told Moses.

Leviticus 16:26-28

The dead bull and the goat for the sin offering is taken outside the camp
v26 The person who sent the goat away must wash his clothes and his body. He can return to the camp.
v27 Aaron had killed a bull (male cow) and a goat for the sin offering. He took their blood into the Most Holy Place to make atonement. Someone must carry their dead bodies outside the camp. He must burn them. That man must burn the skin, the meat and the inside parts.
v28 The man who burnt the animals must wash his clothes and his body. Then he can return to the camp
